Gollyville 'The Story'

Once Upon A Time.........

There was a time, a little over a hundred years ago, when blessed little characters began popping up in the hearts and minds of millions of people the world over. These little fellows were black in colour and they generally kept themselves looking fairly smart; bright striped pants, vivid-coloured vests and a bow-tie to greet the day. These friendly souls were happy-go-lucky in nature, some were even devilish in spirit, but they were mostly a kind-hearted race who loved having a good time. Between the 1920's and 50's, these guys traveled the world like they owned it. They were able to make a decent dollar in the advertising industry and they found they could live very comfortably on the royalties from books, comics, stories, dolls, cars, cartoons, endorsements and many other things they were part of. They coloured the lives of everyone who came into contact with them, including millions of children whose fondest memories of all were cuddling their smiley friends in the cold of night under the covers. They went by the name of, gollys, gollies, golliwogs gollywogs or golliwoggs and were proud of everything they represented. When society changed in the 60's and 70's the lovable golly began to cop a hard time. Nobody wanted to have their face on products any longer and only a few trusted companies continued to use their services. A jam factory in the UK still got them to pose for the pin artist for many years afterwards  but not many other companies were ready to trust them. There had been some bad stories written about the poor old golly and before long they were outcast by society and it was deemed politically incorrect to even mention their name. They'd occasionally poke their faces out in the light of the world at the odd garage sale, but for the most part they were stuffed into cupboards and forgotten about as the new generations grew older. The message had become clear - there was no longer a place in the world for a golly.

Unhappy and tired of the situation, the golly's decided to take matters into their own hands. With the help of a few friends they set off to create a world of their own. They found a large area of land cut off from the rest of the cruel and unjust world where society couldn't find them and they could start anew. In this new place they could live happily ever after with their lives full of fun like it used to be. 'Gollyville' was born. It was a town that had everything a golly could possibly need, with the most important ingredient being uninterrupted fun. You'd think that the location would be discovered after a while, but the golly's made sure to keep it an important secret by only letting a few of their friends in at a time. Teddies, mammy's, pappy's and piccaninny's soon came to visit and they discovered a place more wonderful than they could ever imagine. Up in the mountains, this happy little town had everything a golly could need from the local school to the post office and police service to the delightfully-aromatic bakery. The police were still most important in Gollyville because there were still a few devilish critters that needed some correction. In the early hours the milkman delivers and the bakery makes the sweetest smelling loafs around, ensuring a full and hearty breakfast for all. The train station is the only way in and out of Gollyville as it runs through a crevice in the mountain-side. One thing that the conductor never fails at is keeping his train schedule on time. This fully-functional town in the only place on earth where gollies are free to be gollies and be proud of their existence.

Do you believe in Gollyville...?
